Shreveport-Bossier Announced as a Stop Along the “Stand Beside Her” Tour for USA Softball Women’s National Team in April 2020
The Shreveport-Bossier community welcomes the 2020 USA Softball Women’s National Team with a double header against Louisiana Tech and University of Louisiana Monroe at Cargill Park on April 15, 2020 for the USA Softball “Stand Beside Her” Tour.
Shreveport-Bossier, LA — The Shreveport-Bossier community is proud to welcome USA Softball to the area as a stop along their “Stand Beside Her” tour for the 2020 USA Softball Women’s National Team (WNT). The event will be held on Wednesday, April 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Cargill Park, located at 2800 Cargill Drive in Shreveport.
“The City of Shreveport is excited to welcome the USA Softball team for their ‘Stand Beside Her” Tour. This tour brings people from around the region to Shreveport. It is a great opportunity for us to show our support for the WNT, area universities, and showcase our city and our newly renovated facilities at Cargill Park,” said Mayor Adrian Perkins.
The “Stand Beside Her” tour is a series of competitions and training opportunities for the WNT as they prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Their stop in Shreveport-Bossier includes a doubleheader featuring Louisiana Tech’s Lady Techsters and University of Louisiana Monroe’s Lady Warhawks as competing teams against the 2020 USA. After an eleven-year hiatus, softball will make a comeback to the 2020 Olympic Games, and this will be the only tour stop within the Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi region.
“Tourism surrounding major sporting events is a huge opportunity for Louisiana. The recent Women’s Indoor Volleyball Olympic Qualifier held in Shreveport generated nearly $2 million in economic impact, and the Marucci World Series held in Baton Rouge generated $2.1 million in economic impact. With the support of our local communities, visitors will also experience our world-famous hospitality that draws guests and events back to Louisiana year after year,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
All seating is categorized as general admission and is offered on a “first-come, first serve” basis. Louisiana Tech plays in the first game at 5:30 p.m., and University of Louisiana Monroe begins 35 minutes after the first game ends. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are limited and can be purchased online, only at www.shreveportbossiersports.com. Ticket prices range from $10-$30 excluding fees.
“Having an event of this caliber in Shreveport-Bossier creates excitement around more upcoming events in 2020 and welcomes more opportunities to host USA-sanctioned sporting events in our sister cities. As a result, we look forward to establishing great relationships with USA Softball and Louisiana USA Softball representatives, as well as the local and regional high school and college softball programs,” said Kelly Wells, Executive Director of the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission.
The “Stand Beside Her” tour evokes a powerful message of unity aimed to inspire communities to stand beside the members of the WNT and the future generation of female athletes. The Olympic competition will start on July 22, 2020 with the Gold Medal Game being played on July 28.
“I nominated Shreveport-Bossier as a host of the “Stand Beside Her” tour because softball fans will enjoy the great playing facilities, good food, and of course, Louisiana’s legendary southern hospitality. This is the very first Olympic Softball Team since the 2008 Olympics and the last until at least 2028, so everyone in the regional area should support the red, white and blue,” said Dakota Hill, Junior Olympic Commissioner for USA Softball of Louisiana.
