Volunteer of the Month

Volunteers play a vital role at the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, working alongside staff members, other volunteers and the sports community to jointly achieve our goals. Through our Volunteer of the Month Program, we highlight the contributions of our MVPs: our volunteers. Each month, we select a Volunteer of the Month who performs above and beyond the baseline of excellence!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to all of our volunteers. Without you, we couldn’t make Shreveport-Bossier City a premier destination for sporting events!

May Volunteer of the Month

Name: John Storey

How long have you been a volunteer? I’ve been a full-time volunteer since January 2011 when I retired from the Air Force

What is the favorite event that you have volunteered for? Why?

Probably the Women’s Olympic Volleyball Qualifying tournament because I was the local host for the Argentina’s Women’s team.

Why do you volunteer?

I enjoy helping people whether it’s delivering Meals on Wheels, cooking/serving food to the homeless, doing disaster relief/recovery work or volunteering with the Sports Commission.  Besides, my wife Denise has worked from home for the last 11 years so it keeps me from getting on her nerves!

April Volunteer of the Month

April is National Volunteer Month, a month dedicated to honoring those who volunteer in their communities and encouraging volunteerism. If you’re not already volunteering, why not begin now and experience the many benefits that come along with making a positive impact in your community?

Name: William Bedford

How long have you been a volunteer? 16 years

What is the favorite event that you have volunteered for? Why?

The Balloon Rally. It is great to see the balloons themselves. It is an interactive event that allows me to be really involved with the competition. I really enjoy being able to help the pilots unload their balloons and to follow them across the area and helping them land the balloon and to pack it up for the crew and the pilot. I get to develop a relationship with the pilot and his team over the course of the competition which gives me a great feeling of making a friend. And in the end, I get to learn about a new sport that I had no idea about.

Why do you volunteer?

I enjoy being able to get out and to just help. My goal is to do 100 hours a year. I want to be able to try new things and do different experiences beyond my daily routine.

The Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission has various opportunities for Event Volunteers!  Why Volunteer?  The SBSC Event Volunteers play an essential part in the success of our events by ensuring smooth operations and memorable experiences to our guests. Opportunities for volunteers have included the USA Volleyball Olympic Qualifier, pre-season Pelican NBA games, and the CenterPoint Energy Red River Balloon Rally to name a few.  You can also build your network, enhance your resume, develop your skills, and most of all…have fun!
